Scalable Subband MPEG Coding System

for Video Signals

Abstract

In this work, a scalable multiresolution coding scheme for video applications with various quality is proposed. The scheme adopts hierarchical subband pre-processor and supplies three application resolutions, such as HDTV, conventional TV, and videophone. To each subband, based on different statistic characteristics, a hierarchical motion compensated MPEG-like coding method with custom-designed quantization matrix and scanning direction is applied. Simulation results show that good quality can be achieved with the proposed scheme. And of the most important, it can support resolution-scalability using filter banks and the existing MPEG codec with only minor modifications.
